Collection Tin Counter Extraordinaire

Role

You’ll be the guardian of The Haven’s collection tins based out and about in our community. As you empty the money from each tin, you will hear the sweet sound of coins tinkling onto the desk and see first-hand the kindness and generosity given by supporters. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to ensure these life changing donations are ready for their grand banking adventure. With your careful hands and sharp eye, your task will be to sort through the coins ready for the next step of their journey – the all-important trip to the bank. Along the way you will make note of the donation total in each tin so we can later thank our wonderful tin hosts. So…. Could you give your time to be a Haven tin counter extraordinaire and make a difference to the lives of women and children vulnerable to domestic abuse and homelessness? If the answer is YES and you are ready to embark on a coin-counting adventure with us, then keep reading for the benefits and the important stuff.

What are some of the benefits?

A Chance to Make a Difference: You’re not just counting coins; you’re helping to ensure life-saving services can continue at The Haven

Personal Growth: Sharpen key skills such as attention to detail and precision, both of which are transferable to SO many roles and positions – helping to support you on your own future journey too – whatever that may be.

Boost Your CV: Gain a whole range of valuable hands-on experience with a well-established charity to enhance your CV and stand out from the crowd to future employers.

Earn Glowing References: You will receive a personalised reference highlighting your dedication and skills learnt at The Haven, and of course regular thank you letters and updates will be sent along the way too so you know just how much of a difference you’re making

Guided Support at Your Fingertips: Access expert charity guidance and mentorship from The Haven team throughout your volunteering journey. If a career in fundraising is something you’re interested in, this is a great first step!

Be a part of our Haven Team: Being a volunteer at The Haven is more than giving your time, you really do become part of our Haven family, where volunteers and staff members all work together to make a positive difference to the lives of women and children vulnerable to domestic abuse and homelessness. Throughout your time spent with us, you will meet many of our friendly team and learn more about how your support is helping those we support to take the brave steps to a life free from abuse.

Boost your happiness – giving your time through volunteering is both a meaningful way to give back to your community whilst also boosting your mood and supporting your own mental health. By spending time with others in an environment that is outside of our home can do us the world of good. Working alongside others to not only share your knowledge and experience, but to also enjoy a cup of tea and a chat whilst volunteering can be a nice way to spend a few hours of your day.

It’s your time to give when you can – we understand your time is precious; you might be an avid 9-5’er and are looking to give something back in your spare time, perhaps you’re retired and want to give some of your time in a meaningful way or maybe you are looking to get back into work and want to build up some useful skills? We would be happy to have a chat with you around the time you can give. There is no set requirement of time, we can be flexible with your volunteering days to make it works for us both.

What activities will I be involved in?

  • Coin Counting: Master the art of counting money using both high-tech coin counters and good old-fashioned manual counting for spot checks.
  • Data recording with a difference: Be the person who accurately records and tracks the generous amounts of money raised in each tin, turning numbers and figures into tangible differences to the lives of women and children at The Haven.
  • Bagging Bliss: Become a pro at bagging and banking money, fine-tuning the art of correctly bagging up various amounts in cash bags and learning and following designated banking procedures for cash tins.

What skills and abilities will I need to have?

  • Cash Handling Wizardry – be able to master the art of following cash handling procedures – don’t worry if it is not something you are familiar with, Team Haven will be on hand to support you.
  • Be a Number Guru – to have a good level of numeracy skills, to ensure all of the pennies and pounds are counted correctly so they are ready to make a difference
  • Precision is Key – you will need to have a keen eye for detail and be able to record information accurately
  • Team Work makes the Dream Work – even though counting money is often a one person task, you will never be alone. You will always be based with our friendly fundraising team and will meet others across the organisation too.

Extra, Extra, Read all about it…

Location

Your volunteering will take place at our wonderful Haven HQ in Wolverhampton City Centre. We are based on Waterloo Road.

Hours and Training

We know everyone’s time is precious and so we would be happy to have a chat with you about the time you can give. Ideally for this role we would be looking for someone to support once a quarter, for around 4 hours but this isn’t set in stone, it can be more, it can be less! Just let us know what you can do and we can go from there.

Training and support will be given throughout your volunteering with us. You will meet some of the fundraising team, meet your new best friend the coin counting machine and we will go through a full overview of the process as we start your journey at The Haven. Once you become a volunteer, there are also other great opportunities for you to learn more about our cause and why we do what we do. Being a volunteer would give you the opportunity to attend a whole range of Haven training courses that cover different specialisms and areas of domestic abuse giving you the chance to understand more about the impact of abuse and also how your support as a volunteer can make a difference at The Haven.

Expenses

We offer reimbursement of travel expenses, just speak to the Senior Fundraiser to find out more (she also usually has a nice selection of tea, biscuits and snacks waiting for you on your volunteering days too – BONUS!)

The important stuff

Due to the nature of what we do, we do ask that anyone who would like to volunteer with us receives a DBS check. Under the Care Standards Act 2000, all roles are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Don’t worry, if you are happy to give your time and support us on an ongoing basis, we will cover the cost of this and send you everything you need to start the DBS check. We will have a few other forms and bit and pieces you will need to fill in so we can keep you safe and well-informed during your time with us.

Meet the team

Hello I’m Hayley! I am the Senior Fundraiser at The Haven, and I will be your main contact whilst you are volunteering with us. I have been at The Haven for 6 years and I still love it as much as my first day. Interesting fact about me…last year I jumped 14,000 feet out of a plane in support of The Haven!

I look forward to meeting you and working to make a difference in our community together.
