About this Event

Overview: This training aims to give a comprehensive understanding of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) within the context of domestic and child abuse. It explores the prevalence and the four types of FGM (Clitoridectomy, excision, infibulation, other), the immediate and longer-term effects, emotional and the psychological consequences. It features how females are subjected to FGM in the UK and aboard and who is at risk possible warning signs that FGM may be about to take place, and/or has already happened. The training explores the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003, The Serious Crime Act 2015 and what to do if you are worried about a child under 18, or an adult over 18, good practice and mandatory reporting that can be drawn upon for support, for those working with women and children.

At the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Know what constitutes FGM and distinguish the four types.
  • Understand reasons given for performing FGM and the impacts it has on individuals
  • Identify key health risks and consequences.
  • Recognise indicators that a women/girl has had/is at risk of FGM
  • Know the mandatory reporting duty that professionals have around FGM
  • Understand current legislation around FGM
  • Respond appropriately to cases including referring to the appropriate agencies

The training is aimed for any professional whose work brings them into contact with women and children from the voluntary, statutory, and private sectors e.g., Health professionals including Midwives, Health Visitors and GPs, Refuge Staff and High-Risk Domestic Abuse Practitioners, Community workers, Education, Police, Health and Social Care Providers, Academic Support, Criminal Justice Services, Family Justice Services, Private Fostering.

The training is an e-learning package that will be accessed via a platform we utilise.  It includes statistics, videos, questions and answers, and will ensure information can be embedded into the support you give colleagues, family, friends and your community.
