Domestic Abuse: Forced Marriage & so-called ‘Honour’ Based Abuse

Overview: This Multi-Agency training will increase Practitioners’ knowledge and confidence having an awareness of forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’ based abuse. It is specifically designed to give learners a thorough understanding of what forced marriage is, how to recognise the signs and how to act on concerns by looking at the forced marriage statistics and using real life case studies. It features information on forced marriage protection orders and the forced marriage unit. It also covers best practice guidance to handling a case of so-called ‘honour ‘based abuse, including the “dos and don’ts” and the potential triggers for a forced marriage.

 

At the end of the training participants will be able to:

 

  • Define the term, forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’ based abuse.
  • Identify potential motives and triggers for forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’ based abuse.
  • Explore the impact of Forced Marriage has on the victim.
  • Understand how to respond to a person who is subjected to Forced Marriage in order to protect their safety.
  • Acquire an awareness of current policy and orders on Forced Marriage
  • Locate support that is available to anyone who is subjected to forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’ based abuse.

 

This training is suitable for professionals who want to understand their roles and responsibilities for safeguarding and supporting a person who has or may be forced into a marriage or is a survivor of so-called ‘Honour’ Based Abuse. This may include Specialist Domestic Abuse agencies, Refuge staff, Social Care, Housing Officers, Education, Police, Health and Social Care Providers, Academic Support, Community Outreach Workers and other Professionals who work with survivors of abuse.
