The Haven responds to the government’s strategy to tackle Violence against Women and Girls

This week, the government has released its Tackling Violence against Women and Girls Strategy, after a Call for Evidence which received over 180,000 responses, earlier on in the year. The document outlines how the government intends to prioritise prevention, support survivors, pursue perpetrators and create a robust system.

We welcome the changes to the criminal justice process which should enable more survivors to support the prosecution of their abusers. We note also the acknowledgment of the need to support safe accommodation for those who become homeless as a result of abuse and violence. However, we recall that the Domestic Abuse bill covers a wide range of accommodations whereas the safe refuge model specifically provides holistic wrap-around practical and emotional specialist support for survivors.

We are particularly encouraged to see that the government has recognised that the Istanbul Convention needs to be ratified as soon as possible and we are pleased to see that they have reiterated their commitment to doing what needs to be done to make this happen at the earliest opportunity. This is yet another step in the right direction, as we continue to ask for the eradication of violence against women and girls to be prioritised.

At The Haven, we will continue to support women and children, and raise awareness of the gendered nature of Domestic Abuse. We will also continue to support migrant victims with no recourse to public funds – an aspect that is of huge concern and has not been addressed. The Haven continues to be one of the largest independent refuge providers across the United Kingdom. We know that refuge support is a lifeline as the needs of survivors extend beyond just safe accommodation. We will continue to do our part and will work in partnership with those who share in our vision to end violence against women and girls, while supporting some of the most vulnerable women and children in the country.
