Christmas Appeal
The Haven Wolverhampton is calling out to all our loyal and generous supporters as we launch our Christmas Appeal 2008.
The appeal is in aid of the women and children who will be spending the festive period in refuge accommodation. We want to bring joy and festivity to the lives of those affected by Domestic Violence by providing gifts, preparing dinner and carrying on Festive traditions. Therefore at this time of year we appeal to you to support us to help make a difference in the lives of these women and children.
The Haven Wolverhampton Christmas appeal has proved a major success in previous years and its all down to you, our dedicated supporters, who ensure that The Haven Wolverhampton offices are supplied with donations and presents for our women and children. All we ask is that gifts are new and unwrapped, and tins and nonperishable foods are within their sell-by date. Toiletries for mothers would also be appreciated, as would festive gifts, vouchers and financial donations.
Last year we passed on many items to the families resident within the refuge to make their Christmas a happier one. These little extra touches ensure Christmas is a memorable occasion, for all the right reasons.
If you are interested in making a donation towards our Christmas appeal please call 01902 572140 or email info@havenrefuge.org.uk

Pass the Parcel
You can now show your support for The Haven Wolverhampton whilst doing your Christmas shopping.
The Merry Hill Shopping Centre has chosen to support the children of The Haven Wolverhampton by encouraging staff, colleagues and shoppers to buy and donate an extra gift as part of their Christmas shopping, to those children who will spend Christmas day in a refuge. All gifts will be deposited in a large box under the Merry Hill Christmas tree and will be presented to The Haven Wolverhampton on Friday 19th December.
Madiha Mansoor from The Merry Hill Shopping Centre said “This is the first year Merry Hill has launched the ‘Pass the Parcel’ campaign. We would like to encourage Merry Hill customers and employees to give something back to the community. Westfield employees feel this is a worthy cause to support. We wish to support the children who also become victims of this awful crime.”
So when you are shopping please pick up an extra gift and help to make the children’s Christmas a very Merry one! Thank You

Back to School
September saw the return to school for most of the children at The Haven Wolverhampton. A number of the children benefit from the additional support of the Family Education Support Workers homework sessions, and mums are also encouraged to join in to strengthen the bonds between mother and child. There have also been a series of Education based workshops for the mothers looking at aspects of education with the main focus being on ‘How to Get the Best from your Child’s Education.’ These have been well attended, with each mother receiving a certificate of attendance and a small token gift to say thank you.
October was Black History Month and was acknowledged in all of the family refuges with large colourful displays giving information on some of the major figures from black history including Mary Seacole, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. The children had the opportunity to look at many aspects of different cultures including food tasting and music.
Also in October children in the refuges celebrated Diwali. The children created displays of the Hindu Gods, Rangoli patterns and other pictures, and there were a number of Diwali themed parties, where the mothers, children and staff worked together to create traditional food and music and a lively demonstration of Bhangra dancing from a staff member. All had a fantastic time and are now planning their next celebration.

Grand Charity Event

Fundraising Officer Ros Ward
and Wolf Radio's Dicki Dodd
On 17th November 2008 The Haven Wolverhampton hosted a Grand Charity Event at The Red Fort Indian Restaurant, Wolverhampton. The fundraising event had been in preparation since late July and aimed to raise funds for women and children experiencing Domestic Violence in the City.
The Haven Wolverhampton has a long standing history of kindness and support from those individuals who continue to step up to the plate and support us as we strive to make a difference to those seeking our help; and for this reason the event was an astounding success.
Mr Dickie Dodd from our very own Wolf Radio compered the event leading the evening with enthusiasm, good humour, audience participation and encouragement during the ‘Auction’ - setting the scene for a high energy packed evening. The finest Indian cuisine was served with style and the entertainment from local singer Marcie was just the ticket! Eager punters also surrounded the Casino table whilst the ambiance of the restaurant allowed chilled out relaxation zones.

Goody bags
All in all the evening was most entertaining and a huge thank you to Dicki Dodd, our paying guests and businesses who provided Auction Prizes including Virgin Experience Days, Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Association, Delta Force Paintballing, Eden Day Spa and many more. A special word of thanks is also extended to colleagues who helped support behind the scenes of the event.
The evening raised £715 which will directly benefit those women and children currently in our refuge accommodation. Thank You. I hope to see you there next time around!
