DAPHNE Project
An EU Comparative: Counselling Survivors of Domestic Violence.

In October 2010 The Haven learnt that it was successful in its bid to the Daphne programme to develop a research project which will explore the provision of counselling services available to victims of Domestic Violence. The Daphne programmes aims to prevent and combat violence against children, young people and women and to protect victims and groups at risk as part of the General Programme 'Fundamental Rights and Justice'.

The Daphne programme grants funding to Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) which are already active in the field of preventing an combating violence against children, young people and women by assisting them in developing research.

This research aims to expand the knowledge and understanding of such NGO’s which in turn supports victims and reduces their vulnerability to violence. By collaborating with other NGO’s in research, data collection and analysis there is the opportunity to share good practice and develop the skills of staff working in the sector. Daphne projects also assist in raising awareness of the issue of Domestic Violence as a European and national concern and keeping it high in the political agenda.

Daphne Project at The Haven Wolverhampton
The Haven Wolverhampton’s Daphne project is exploring the provision of counselling services for women affected by Domestic Violence including; whether they are adequate, funding, and whether the provision is sufficient for the area. Counselling services have proven to have a great impact
on the recovery of victims of Domestic Violence as they offer women the chance to express their emotions and deal with their experiences in a way which allows them to recover, improve their wellbeing and work to re-build their lives after abuse. Counsellors are also often the first people that victims disclose details of Domestic Violence to and can be instrumental to a victims recovery.
However, in spite of these
benefits and the positive effects of counselling, provision remains inadequately and disappointingly underfunded. Specifically, there is a lack of training for counselling professionals, which as a result limits the effectiveness of the service offered.

Through research The Haven’s project will aim to encourage effective investment and consequently ensure a longer term impact for victims. There is a specific European aspect to the project, as Daphne projects involve NGO’s from at least two member states, and so The Haven Wolverhampton will work in collaboration with research partners across Europe, to determine if the situation and circumstances experienced there are also the same.

The results of the project will be an important tool for NGO’s and charities providing counselling services to share methods of good practice.

The results will also provide a map of investment, policy and strategy which in turn will be a used as a recommendation to commissioners and grant-giving bodies.

The Haven has worked to set up and establish the Daphne project website in order to promote and publicise the important aims and objectives of our project. The website includes information about the project, its partners, and its work so far. The website also has a separate login area for project members for use as a communication tool. Here, they can share materials and use it as a discussion forum for research topics and any issues arising. The website will also publish the results of the research and as such will be a central tool for dissemination of the project to a wider audience. In addition to the website, the project now has its own Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin pages. These are a hugely effective method for reaching a wider range and variety of people and organisations, and so can generate interest in our project beyond that of traditional approaches. We hope that this online presence will enhance the impact of our project and garner interest for the significant research we are conducting.
