Meet the Community Advocacy Support Team

Haven launches Community Advocacy Support Team

We are excited to announce that The Haven Wolverhampton has launched a new initiative in order to provide specialist and intensive support to women and children affected by Domestic Violence living in the Community.

The Community Advocacy Support Team provides a broad range of support approaches; combining established skills and expertise of Floating Support with the specialist skill of advocacy for women and children at risk from the most severe forms of Domestic Violence. The team will support women living in the community by providing assistance to clients with sustaining a tenancy, safety planning, support with civil and criminal proceedings and practical and emotional support.

The Community Advocacy Support Team is launched at a time which coincides with the publication of ‘Safety in Numbers’ commissioned by the Hestia Fund and funded by the Sigrid Rausing Trust and the Henry Smith Charity. The research, which explored the role of Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) in supporting those women at high or extreme risk of severe emotional, physical or sexual abuse, found that the role of IDVAs was imperative in helping women to become free of abuse. The study, of which The Haven Wolverhampton was one of 7 IDVA providers across England and Wales who were asked to take part in the research, gathered information from over 2,500 women. The findings of the study indicate that the work carried out by IDVAs is paramount in producing significant positive changes in women’s safety. As a result, following tailored intensive support from IDVAs 67% of the women interviewed reported a total cessation of abuse. Furthermore, those women suffering severe and multiple forms of abuse fell from 80% to less than 20%.

Groundbreaking work by The Haven Wolverhampton’s first IDVA, Gail Riggs, has led the way and we have followed her example by developing within the Community Advocacy Support Team, the skills needed to adopt this approach to make more women safer. Development and training in this area will continue with staff undertaking specialist training in order to provide an all round, holistic service for women.
