On Sunday 10th October 2010 The Haven held it's first ever Bark in the Park event at East Park in conjunction with Sunnyside Kennels.
Owners bought their beloved dogs along to East Park on a brisk Sunday morning to complete a one mile sponsored walk. Each dog was given a certificate, rosette and goody bag full of treats once they completed the circuit. |

The event was organised to raise awareness of the link between Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse and raise vital funds for both The Haven and Sunnyside Kennels.
There is increasing research and clinical evidence to suggest that there are links between the abuse of vulnerable children and adults and animals. |
"Police arrested a 39 year-old man and charged him with second-degree assault, first-degree cruelty to animals, theft and a misdemeanor violation of a Domestic Violence order after they responded to a report of an altercation. Officers determined that the man had apparently assaulted his wife with a large wooden lamp during an argument over money. The woman suffered a broken arm. Shortly after he was arrested, officers returned to the residence when the victim discovered her dog dead behind a chair of apparent knife wounds. Officers recovered the knife, which was linked to the suspect." (Advocacy for Animals)
Leading children's charity, NSPCC, have produced a publication on understanding the links between Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse. For more information click here.
A special thank you is extended to all who took part in the event. |
