Report on International Conference “Society Without Violence - Prevention of Domestic Violence Offences"
The first international conference in Russia on the Prevention of Domestic Violence Offences - “Society Without Violence” - took place in Ekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Central Russia on the 9th October 2007. It was organized by The Crisis Centre “Ekaterina” in partnership with The Haven Wolverhampton. First time in history many agencies from different areas of the Sverdlovsk region actively participated in a conference on domestic violence (including judges, prosecutors, police, lawyers and the staff of local regional women’s crisis centres).

The conference was attended by British delegation:

Baroness Scotland specially prepared a video which was shown with subtitles for the Russian audience.

The conference was a huge success, and the participation of British experts was key to raising the profile of this event and the role of the voluntary sector in addressing the crime of domestic violence.  National television channel “Vestii” broadcast coverage of the conference, and there have also been major articles in the main regional newspapers.

There have been many encouraging developments as a result of the conference; ten administrative regions in Sverdlovsk have requested training on domestic violence from The Crisis Centre “Ekaterina”; three more crisis centres have applied to join the Coalition of Crisis Centres of the Ural-Siberian Region; the Sverdlovsk Regional Court has taken the decision to carry out a review of 30 homicides in the region; and the need for a hostel for women and children experiencing domestic violence is now being widely discussed in press and amongst stakeholder agencies.

Members of British Delegation expressed high satisfaction with the conference. They felt that “it was a well-organised event, with a good variety added by the various meetings” (Shamim Qureshi).
Staff of the Women’s Crisis Centre “Ekaterina” expressed their gratitude for the support of The Haven Wolverhampton. They felt the contribution of British delegates helped Russian professionals gain understanding of the world’s best practices in addressing domestic violence, which has ultimately contributed to improving the support available for women and children suffering from domestic violence in Russia. Furthermore, this event has helped to build positive links between our two nations and to play a part in raising the profile of Russian NGOs.
