Emergency Accommodation - Refuge
If you need to leave your home as a result of Domestic Violence you will need to find temporary accommodation whilst you decide what to do next. You may consider going to a refuge.
What is a refuge?
Refuges are safe places where women and children can stay temporarily until they find new accommodation.
The
Haven has 5 refuges across the City of Wolverhampton all of which place considerable emphasis on safety, security and confidentiality. Women and dependent children (up to the age of 16) are able to access refuge accommodation subject to meeting The Haven's eligibility criteria.
The refuges provide high standard quality accommodation in secure locations, with twenty-four hour staff support, and include children’s playgrounds and facilities for disabled residents. Each refuge has communal kitchen, dining and living areas with private bedrooms and en-suite facilities. As well as practical support the refuge environment also offers emotional support from trained support workers. You will also be able to access a number of The Haven's other support services whilst in refuge including Children & Young People's Support, Counselling, Financial Inclusion and Volunteering. |

How long can I stay at The Haven?
There is no limit on the amount of time you are able to stay at The Haven – you are able to stay with us until you feel ready to move on. At this point you will be offered Resettlement support where you will be given assistance with finding a new tenancy and preparing you for your move back to independent living.
The cost of staying in a Haven refuge
There is a cost to staying in refuge accommodation. Residents are required to pay rent which covers the cost of your room in refuge, as well as a personal charge which covers the cost of utilities (gas, electricity, water etc) and food.
If you are not working, or on a low income, you may be able to claim Housing Benefit to cover the cost of rent. The Haven employs a Benefits & Immigration Officer who will able to support you with applications for benefits. Housing benefit will not cover the cost of your personal charge, however other income such as Jobseekers Allowance or Income Support can cover this cost.
The cost of rent and personal charge is dependent upon your individual situation and whether or not you wish to bring any dependent children with you to refuge.

Whilst we try our hardest to accommodate those in need of temporary accommodation due to Domestic Violence in our refuges we are sometimes unable to support every woman. The Haven refuges are able to accommodate a maximum of 46 women and 100 children at any one time. On the occasion that we do not have any room available in our refuges The Haven will work hard to find alternative accommodation for you elsewhere. The Haven works closely with other women’s refuge providers including Women’s Aid, Refuge and Shelter to support those affected by Domestic Violence.
The Haven also provides specialist support for women experiencing ill mental health as a result of Domestic Violence. For more information please click here
