The Haven opens newly refurbished refuge

Sitting Room

The Haven Wolverhampton was established in 1973 with the aim to provide quality and sensitive services to women and children affected by domestic violence.

The Haven Wolverhampton places a strong focus not only on helping women escape domestic violence but also on the welfare and happiness of the women once living in the hostels.

We have five emergency accommodation refuges all of which serve different client groups. We have various shelters specifically for families, for single women with complex needs and for women with mental health needs as a result of Domestic Violence.

In March 2008 The Haven Wolverhampton reopened one of its refuges after extensive refurbishment. Long term planning with Midland Heart, together with funding from The Housing Corporation, enabled successful completion of this major refurbishment project.

The refurbished refuge accommodates single women aged sixteen years or over who are escaping domestic violence and homelessness and offers 10 units of en-suite accommodation and a private garden area.

The refuge has a long committed history in the area and has strategic relevance in Wolverhampton.

The following strategies which have been identified within the area include; Crime and Disorder strategy, Homeless strategy, NSF Strategy for Mental Health and Domestic Violence Strategies to name a few.

Since the opening of its doors earlier this year, the refuge has been fully occupied and continues to improve and develop.

Domestic Violence and barriers to learning

IT facilities at The Haven Wolverhampton

IT facilities at
The Haven Wolverhampton

Domestic Violence and homelessness are complex issues. Providing women with a safe place to live is not enough to connect them with mainstream society as living in a refuge can create huge barriers to learning.

The Haven believes that free, safe access to Information Technology will give women realistic tools to start new lives. We aim to give women some of these tools with the opportunity to access IT through our own Information Technology suite.

We are currently developing the suite and need support with various items to finish the room; office chairs, IT equipment of any sort, paper etc. We would also appreciate help and advice from any tutors who would be willing to donate some of their time.

For more information and if you could help us develop this worthy venture please contact us at: info@havenrefuge.org.uk or call 01902 572140.
