The Haven agreed to take over the Account Management of WOW last Autumn as the work needed re-developing and individual member groups of WoW had not readily got the capacity to take on this function before a new WOW Network Co-ordinator could be put into place. Since then, Susie (Administrative Assistant to the PA) has been helping WOW with administration and Caroline has been helping the group re-establish itself and write a funding bid to the Community Empowerment Network for a Co-ordinator /Administrator for this network. We have recently secured funding for the above and The Haven has agreed to host the worker until WoW is developed enough to become self sufficient. Parv (Resettlement Worker) has also recently become involved in this work as WOW representative for The Haven, as Caroline is going on maternity leave. Parv will provide information on what is happening around the City with WoW events, activities and aims to women who use Haven services. WOW is being consulted on such matters as planning safety in the City Centre, which incorporates women’s needs and addresses their issues in relation to how women use public areas and on other women’s issues across the City. This work is a good opportunity for Haven Staff and the women with whom we work have a voice in city-wide activities and projects. Contact Parv: 01902 572169 if you want more details and when the Co-ordinator comes into post do contact her if you are interested in what’s going on for WoW. Caroline Mansell
All hostels have networks installed which allow sharing of the internet, printers and other resources. Soon, all PCs used by residents will have access to the Internet. New procedures will be developed and implemented to ensure safe use of the Internet. New computers have been ordered for the Children's library and one of the Hostel offices. The Haven Wolverhampton website has been extended to include new sections and facilities. “Staff Only” section contains all Haven policies, procedures and forms available for download, as well as other resources and iinformation. Please send us updates to publish on the internal and external section. We encourage everyone to make more extensive use of the website. The children’s section of the website is in the process of being developed, to include details of competitions, access to educational, informational and entertaining websites. An electronic communication has increased internally and externally. In December 2004, The International 16 Days of Activism Against Violence to Women and Children was celebrated by a Women’s Organisations of Wolverhampton (WOW) at a networking and activity event hosted at the YWCA. Women from groups across the city were enabled to access National and International women’s organisations web sites. Via e-mail, a number of support messages were sent from WOW members to women’s groups who work in the area of women’s community development and domestic violence projects both in Britain and around the world. Caroline helped co-ordinate the event on behalf of WOW and Di came from Words for Women to do a poetry reading. An inspiring day was had by all. However we are very short of reliable computers and printers. Old equipment is expensive and often impossible to upgrade or repair. Not all premises have a sufficient number of PCs to provide for the needs of the users. The Haven ICT strategy has plans for linking all premises into one network to enhance communications and data sharing, however this is subject to further fundraising efforts, and welcome Donors who can assist with supporting IT at The Haven Wolverhampton. Domestic Violence, the area that we as an organisation strive towards ending, recognises the effects, affects and implications for many women and children experiencing the crime. Through our continuation of promoting justice for our service users we continue to be non-judgemental in our approach in addressing problems faced by those who access our services. We strive to offer choice in decision making whilst our women proceed in planning for their future with their families. Many women choose to return to their partners for reasons that are personal to them and for some there are positive outcomes in working through that relationship. As we continue to support women in their choices whatever those choices are, we encourage processes and options available to assist them in making the right choices These can take many forms either by recommending Mediation, Counselling, Family Therapy, Referral to other Agencies etc. or whatever we can offer within our confines by way of supporting that family. A recent card from an ex service user to one of our Hostel Managers demonstrates the ability for some women to return to a relationship which although had difficulties is moving forward, steadily progressing as a family unit and the couple are working through their issues together.
Dear E It is nice for us at The Haven to hear from our ex - service users,
to know that you are safe and well gives us that little boost that confirms
the work we do is worthwhile. Our very best wishes to all our service users for a happy future forward
from residency at The Haven. |
