Pearl of the East
Women’s Cultural and Business Forum UK / Uzbekistan

The Haven Wolverhampton has worked in partnership with the Socio-Economic Development Centre SABR in Uzbekistan for over 12 years to support women from low income families in the Samarkand region of Uzbekistan to achieve economic independence in a safe environment.

To celebrate the partnership a very special event was held in Westminster, London on 28th October 2009 entitled ‘Pearl of the East Women’s Cultural and Business Forum UK/Uzbekistan’. The event featured presentations from; Lord Frederick Ponsonby - Chair of the British Uzbek Society, Mr Otabek Akbarov – Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the UK, Mr Rupert Joy – Ambassador of the UK to Uzbekistan, Mrs. Sayyora Khodjaeva – Uzbekistan Ministry of Justice, Jafarova Haticha – Chair of the Women’s Council Uzbekistan, Peter Kyle – Deputy CEO of ACEVO, Mavludakhon Shirinova – Director of SABR and Kath Rees – Chief Executive of The Haven Wolverhampton. The forum also included a beautiful display of clothes, art and food, all produced and made by women in Uzbekistan and concluded with a music and dance performance by ‘Oferin’ a traditional folk band from Uzbekistan.

Kath Rees stated “I was delighted to participate in the Pearl of the East event. Following the event we were invited to the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in London where the Ambassador of Uzbekistan publicly pledged his support to the further development of SABR and NGO’s in Uzbekistan - we could not have wished for more.  My thanks go to all the staff and volunteers who assisted us making this first of a kind event a resounding success. Hopefully there will be many more events such as this in years to come.”
