Participation at the 10th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women in Madrid 3-9 July 2008 |
Equality is not a Utopia |
| On 5th July 2008 The Haven Wolverhampton in partnership with The Crisis Centre “Ekaterina”, Russia and The Socio Economic Development Centre “SABR”, Uzbekistan, delivered a Panel at the 10th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women in Madrid. The panel was titled: International Work To Enable Women To Claim Their Rights – Experience Between The UK, Russia And Uzbekistan (http://www.mmww08.org/). |
| The main aim of the Congress was to address one of the main challenges of the new century - the attaining equality between men and women in all walks of life while at the same time acknowledging the many diversities that distinguish them. Under the slogan “Equality is not a utopia”, this 10th Women's Worlds event focused on the fundamental problems and issues affecting women's lives. |
| The Congress was hosted by the University of Madrid and was attended by 3,700 participants from 110 countries. The congress organisers received about two thousand eight hundred proposals from all parts of the world. More than one hundred presentations were scheduled into three types of sessions: plenary, semi-plenary, and regular sessions. The busy programme from 3 July to 8 July 2008 was accompanied by a number of cultural events, exhibitions, festivals and concerts. |
The Haven Wolverhampton’s Panel proposal was for the Specialist Area 8: Human Rights.
The objective was to present the results of the 11 years of partnership work with The Haven International partners The Crisis Centre “Ekaterina”, Russia and The Socio-Economic Development Centre “SABR”, Uzbekistan.
The 1.5 hour Panel was chaired by Ann Dawson (Chair of the Personnel Sub Committee and a member of The Haven Wolverhampton’s Board). The speakers were Kath Rees (Chief Executive Officer, The Haven Wolverhampton, UK), Mavluda Shirinova (Director of the Socio-Economic Development Centre “SABR”, Uzbekistan) and Luidmila Ermakova (Director and Founder, The Women’s Crisis Centre “Ekaterina”, Russia). |

| The speeches covered the analysis of political, economic, social and environmental analysis of the situation in relevant countries, the work undertaken by each organisation and the value of partnership work between three countries. The panel was very well received and there was time for useful discussion and questions from the audience at the end of presentations. | The congress gave an opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with many professionals in the world and also to promote The Haven’s work at the international level. Although faced with some poor organisations and frequent changed to the schedule we managed to attend a number of useful sessions on domestic violence, gender violence, trafficking, women’s rights etc and meet many inspirational women from different parts of the world. |
| The congress gave us energy and inspiration to continue to challenge violence against vulnerable women and children at the international level. |
The 11th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women will be held on July 3-7, 2011 in Canada with the theme “Inclusion, Exclusion, and Seclusion: Living in a Globalised World” (www.ww-mf2011.ca).
